Shangarh & Sainj Valley

“Into the Meadows & Beyond – Shangarh to Sainj”

Here are some interesting facts about the Shangarh & Sainj Valley that will make your journey even more exciting!

  • A Protected Sacred Meadow:
Shangarh Meadows (Shangarh Maidan) are protected by the local deity Shangchul Mahadev, which is why the land has never been ploughed, built upon, or commercialised.
  • Mythological Roots :
According to legends, Pandavas stayed here during their exile, and the meadows were created by them – giving the land a deep mythological importance.

  •  Unspoiled & Crowd-Free :
Even today, Shangarh remains far less crowded compared to Manali or Kasol, making it one of Himachal’s cleanest and calmest destinations.

  • Himalayan National Park View:
From the meadows, you get panoramic views of the Great Himalayan National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
  • Part of Great Himalayan National Park:
Sainj Valley lies inside the GHNP, home to rare species like snow leopards, Himalayan tahr, and western tragopan.

  • Villages Frozen in Time:
Villages like Deori, Ropa, Shanshar, and Tindaar still follow centuries-old architecture and traditions—an untouched Himalayan lifestyle.

  • One of the Quietest Valleys of Himachal:
Chakrata was established by the British Indian Army and is still a restricted cantonment area — foreign tourists need special permission to visit!
  • Gateway to Hidden Treks :
Sainj Valley offers access to less-known gems like Jiwanal Valley, Pundrik Rishi Lake Trek, Ropa Forest Hike, and Tindaar Waterfall.

  • A Valley of Ancient Temples :
Sainj is home to 300–400 years old temples like Shanshar Temple and Pundrik Rishi Temple, reflecting deep cultural roots.
